Angels & Demons, by Dan Brown

Posted by: Grand High Poobah    in Fiction Review, Uncategorized

This book puts The DaVinci Code in the dirt. Seriously.
I enjoyed The DaVinci Code, despite the controversy. Most of my friend were saying that if you’ve read the second book, don’t go back and read Angels & Demons because it’ll just make you disappointed in the second book. Somewhat true, but I would still recommend going ahead and reading Angels & Demons because it is a very well-written story.
Like I said, it puts The DaVinci Code in the dirt. This is certainly at a level to be called “literature”, but I do have to admit that the ending was a little deflating – though it didn’t really diminish the story.
As a last thought, I would say you absolutely have to read Angels & Demons if you’ve read The DaVinci Code – and if you’ve read neither, just read Angels & Demons.

Furies of Calderon, by Jim Butcher

Posted by: Grand High Poobah    in Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Uncategorized

This was GREAT! I absolutely loved this book. It is definitely more old-world type fantasy than The Dresden Files, but the writing is no less wonderful. Jim Butcher is a very talented writer, and he has gone on to prove it with this book. In my opinion, it’s much easier for a writer to get into a genre and stick there so for this writer to venture from a modern-day type of realist-fantasy into the type of writing involved in writing something like The Furies of Calderon, is an admirable feat. For it to be just as praiseworthy as the other books with just the first book of the series (trilogy?), deserves a standing ovation…though I haven’t quite done that because I finished reading it in the wee hours of the morning. I didn’t want to throw off the electric blankie to stand in the cold and clap.
If you’ve read The Dresden Files, it’s a pretty sure bet that you’ll love this new series just as much. It’s been great to read these books and I recommend you do, too.

Noble Intentions, by Katie MacAlister

Posted by: Grand High Poobah    in Humor, Romance

Oh, laughter. The reason I adore Katie MacAlister’s books is because her writing style is quirky, down-to-earth, and her characters are both realistic and off-kilter. They are all romance novels, so guys probably aren’t that interested, but if you’re looking for something a little off-beat that isn’t all smoldering eyes and mysterious strangers in the night then this would probably be a good bet. It’s definitely not Nora Roberts or Danielle Steele, nor is it what one of my friend’s significant other terms a “crotch novel”. This particular book is a historical romance (basically) and it is a really fun read.
This book made me laugh out loud (and you should’ve seen the looks I got) and in some places I ended up doing that weird face we make when we can’t decide if something is hilarious, or just plain wrong. I would highly recommend any of her books, but in this case I am recommending Noble Intentions. It is one of her better works.
