Dresden Files Book Six!!!

Posted by: Grand High Poobah    in Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Series

I recently finished this book, and it was splendiferous!!! In my last review of the series, I said that the book I was reviewing had been my favorite so far. It has now been replaced with book six. (Book five, if I didn’t review it, was also wonderful.) In this book, Harry finally gets to the bottom of the oblique references that have been made in previous books about the possibility of him having siblings through his mother.
The books starts out with the conclusion of an investigation, and in the course of the story there were several parts that had me laughing out loud, along with the puzzles and interesting twists that seem to be characteristic of Butcher’s writing – at least for this series. I you’ve been reading The Dresden Files and felt bogged down in the earlier books, or wish there was more humor, push on until you’ve reached book six. This was the best book so far, and I can imagine that as I continue with the series, it will only get better. Butcher’s writing has exceeded my expectations.

Sprint Mogul – Squeeee!

Posted by: Grand High Poobah    in Story Time, Tech

I am a very very happy geek right now. I just got a new phone servie and a new phone; the Sprint Mogul. The Mogul is a PDA phone, and it is awesome. I have wanted both a new phone and a PDA for a while because 1) I wasn’t crazy about the phone I had, though it served me well and 2) My life is just crazy enough that I’ve gone nuts trying to find an efficient way of keeping track of all the dates, times, and events I need to remember – and I had about a billion different sources to muddle through: my laptop, my notes from school, my calendar, the academic and orchestra calendars, e-mails from the school, friends and classmates, my anal-looking printed schedule for every week, and still it was hard to know where I was supposed to be on what day, at what time – so a PDA seemed like a logical solution.
One tiny thing I could carry around with me no matter where I went (I tried hauling my laptop around but it gets heavy after a while) and it would have a calendar that I could update, a way to keep my schedule, and so on.
In conclusion the PDA phone is exactly what I wanted, though I didn’t know that until I got it. So far, I’ve customized it with several different small changes. I added an few mp3s and made one my ringtone, I took a picture of the sunset (that I took) from my laptop and made it my background image, I added sudoku, VistaHide Battery Gauge (v1.1.1), Google Maps, and I’m working on finding a messenger service that will work with Yahoo!, simply because I want to be able to chat with people when I have some spare time between classes. I’ve also entered my class schedule in, with room numbers and all that good stuff so that I’ll know where to go when classes start on Monday. Aaaaand, I also discovered that there are three different alarms you can set, and not only can you set the alarm time, but you can set the days of the week for which it will function, and name the alarm. So, once school starts, I can have an alarm on for my MWF classes, and a seperate alarm for my T-Th classes. Awesome.
I <3 my new phone.

This is the fourth book in the series and strangely, I think it’s my favorite so far. It had a lot of twists and turns in it, but I really enjoyed the fact that the mystery of it kept me guessing. Of course, I also enjoy that you get Dresden’s inner monologue as he gets through all of the obstacles facing him – it’s a great characteristic in any book, but Butcher does a great job with the writing style. In Summer Knight, Dresden finds out that a debt of his has changed ownership and the new owner requires his assistance in solving a murder that has the potential consequence of leading toward the end of the world…as in seasonal weather and events basically attacking each other and wreaking havoc with the natural order of…oh…everything. Dreams Made Flesh is an anthology by Anne Bishop, bestselling author of the Black Jewels Trilogy. Dreams Made Flesh is, in my opinion, a necessity if you’ve read aforementioned trilogy. There are events and things that are mentioned in the trilogy that you don’t get to read about in the books that leave you wondering what the full story is. One story is the inception of the Blood, one story is the relationships in the High Lord’s past, one is how Lucivar and Marian met, and the last is…well you wonder what happens after the trilogy ends. How do Jaenelle and Daemon get on? Daemon and Lucivar? Surreal? the Kindred?
This review will just cover one of thos short stories. The Prince of Ebon Rih gives us (finally!) the story of how Lucivar and Marian met and the circumstances surrounding the whole story and I must admit, it’s quite a story! Read the rest of this entry »
